Infocities
Infocities Project was the joint Arena 2000 project of the City
of Helsinki and Elisa Communications, with the aim to deploy and
test new telecommunication network services for citizens. Infocities
Project was part of the EU TEN-Telecom Community Programme.
The goals of Helsinki Infocities Project
were:
- to give information on the City's services in the net
- to create a flexible and reliable environment for e-transacting.
- to increase the availability of municipal services through
data networks
- to create a free, open-to-all events
calendar with information of all City events
- to advance the availability and use of cultural services through
data networks by utilising the latest aids of multimedia technology.
The Virtual Museum
based on the archives of the City Museum is one of its best applications.
International Partners:
The International Master Project was grouped in six sub-projects:
Public & Civic Services, Culture, Education, Health, Transport,
Electronic Commerce and Infocities. These services were first tested
in eight European Cities: Helsinki, the Hague, Antwerp, Barcelona,
Bologna, Manchester, Liège and Nice.
The City of Helsinki and Elisa Communications participated actively
in the project from the very beginning, in fact already in the preparatory
phase. Elisa is also the responsible principal party to the main
sub-project Public & Civic Services. Moreover, Elisa and the
City of Helsinki were parties to the Culture and Education sub-project.
