Botanical Garden University of Helsinki
The Botanical Garden belonging to the University of Helsinki
is at Kaisaniemi, near the centre of town, and at Kumpula.
There are over 700 different species growing in the greenhouses.
Kaisaniemi Park is particularly popular in summer, when everything
is green.
The Botanical Garden was originally established in the centre
of Turku (then capital of Finland) in 1678 but were transferred
to the new capital, Helsinki, in 1829. They are of considerable
historical interest with their plants and protected buildings.
The iron-framed palm house designed by Gustaf Nyström dates
from 1889, the Helsinki University Department of Botany and
the museum building, likewise designed by Nyström and displaying
Dutch-Danish influence, from 1903.
