Bus Station / Lasipalatsi Film and Media Centre
The Bus Station is to the west of Mannerheimintie, behind
the long low building called Lasipalatsi and between Simonkatu
and Salomonkatu. In the 18th-19th centuries the area was owned
by the Army, and the Lasipalatsi (Glass Palace) stands on
what used to be the barracks destroyed in the Civil War of
1918. All that remained was the building that now serves the
Bus Station.
The Lasipalatsi in functional style was so named because
of its big plate glass windows. It also has colourful neon
signs in the true urban manner. It now houses a cinema, a
media centre, a library, exhibition rooms, cafés and a restaurant.
