Porthania
Porthania (1957) on Yliopistonkatu is part of the city centre
campus of the University of Helsinki. In front of the modernist
building is a steel sculpture called "Helsinki" representing
the cosmopolitanism of the university and the marriage of
art and science. The statue was a gift from the Finnish Cultural
Foundation. Opposite Porthania is the university's administrative
building (1970s).
Porthania was named after the 18th century professor Henrik
Gabriel Porthan (1739-1804), father of the nationalist disciplines.
The Porthania "piazza" is often the scene of student events.
