Hellenius House
Aleksanterinkatu
24
The residence of County Secretary Hellenius was built in
1770 as a continuation of the homes of merchants Bock and
Burtz. In the manner typical of the times, it was a corner
house with two facades. An extra story was added later during
the changes to the facade. Other changes were made in the
19th century, but as with Burtz House, the 1830s facade was
left untouched.
During the early decades of the 20th century the annex at
the southern end added in 1838 was converted into a police
garage. In the course of the renovation of City Hall beginning
in 1965, part of the southern wing was pulled down, leaving
only the street facade. The police depot was banished from
the site and replaced by an entrance to the inner courtyard
and the northern wall of the foyer to the City Hall banqueting
suite. Hellenius House is now owned by the City of Helsinki
and has been converted into commercial premises and offices.
