Cellar

In Room Z was revealed remnants of the north wall of Govinius' cellar, around 1.75 metres wide. The cellar consisted of four east-west trending rooms of similar size, with a narrower passageway and exit between. The 1993 excavations revealed the two eastern rooms and the east end of the passageway. The two western rooms and the west end of the passageway were excavated in 1995-96.

The north wall of the cellar was excavated in Room X. It incorporated a one metre high section of mostly simple lengthwise brick lining (14 layers of brick, the size of the bricks 24-25 cm x 11-12.5 cm x 6.5 cm). Around seven layers of bricks remained from the vaults that curved towards the south. Under the brick wall was a foundation made from stones some 40 cm in size with level upper surfaces.

An excavation of Aleksanterinkatu uncovered the western and eastern wall of the cellar rooms and also an intermediate wall. The bricks had remained at the height of the first vault bricks. The start of the intermediate wall vaults (1-3 brick layers) had been built so that on top of the flat brick wall was a thick layer of plaster rising towards the centre with a brick in the middle of it. On top of that, between the obliquely laid bricks, was plaster, a poorly fired brick and stone. ili.

The bonding of the intermediate wall was achieved by putting transverse bricks in the centre, one lengthwise brick on the outer walls and two transverse bricks lower down. Between them was a thick layer of plaster. The bonding could only be studied in a couple of places, because it was not possible to dig deeper.
