The 3D-view has been developed as a more flexible alternative to
the 2D-view, allowing e.g. full freedom of movement in the 3D-environment.
If you chose to use the 3D-view at the Main Page, you will see the
Left Half of the screen containing three main areas:
At the top is the 3D-window, using VRML-models
to describe the virtual environment.
In the middle is an orthographic
picture of the area, the NaviMap, which is helpful to avoid "getting
lost", when moving around in the virtual environment.
At the bottom is the "Show in 3D" QuickView Selector,
which is convenient for quickly jumping to a specific address in
the 3D-view. First choose the name of the street, then the number,
after which the viewpoint moves to the corresponding location. JavaScript
must be enabled in the web browser for
this to work.
Moving through the 3D-environment is not difficult. Different VRML-browsers
have slightly different methods of navigation, but a common way
is to move the mouse while holding down its left button. The distance
that you drag the mouse determines the speed of the movement. Release
the mouse button to stop all movement.
In the following you will find some additional hints for the recommended
Cortona browser:
- SHIFT + left mouse button, to accelerate the movement
- Space key + left mouse button, to turn upward and downward.
- ALT key + left mouse button, to pan left or right.
By clicking with the right mouse button in the 3D-window you will
access Cortona's pop-up menu, through which more functionality,
and help pages can be accessed. Through "Preferences; General"
you can for example set the CPU load to its lowest value and through
"Preferences; Renderer" disable anti-aliasing, both good
ways to achieve better performance.
In the 3D-environment, you will notice two kinds of mostly yellow
colored logo-links. By clicking a Phonelink
you will get information related to a certain address, e.g. companies
and their telephone numbers. The TourLink
gives in a similar way information on a certain location, usually
as a panoramic picture and a short explaination.
The NaviMap is an excellent aid when navigating in the 3D-view,
as it shows you the position with a blue dot on the map as you move
around. The orientation of the viewpoint is indicated with a short
line, perpendicular to the blue dot.
In the following you will find some additional features shortly
explained:
- Press left mouse button on blue dot + drag mouse, to move the
viewpoint also in the 3D-window.
- Press left mouse button on blue dot + Alt key + drag mouse,
to move the viewpoint vertically in the 3D-window.
- Press "plus" and "minus" buttons, to zoom
in and out.
- Press "Extend" button, to show the extents of the
map area.
- Check "Track", to allow tracking of the viewpoint.
